Bled Island is reached by pletna, a flat-bottomed boat rowed standing by men from a couple of dozen families holding the right since the eighteenth century, and ninety-nine steps climb from the jetty to the church door. Pletna oarsmen take cash only, and the island church charges separately once you land. Nobody warns you that the boat waits roughly half an hour and departs without stragglers. A per-person nightly tourist tax is added to every accommodation bill in the municipality.

When the weather turns in Lake Bled

Bled's own springs feed the indoor thermal pools at the Ziva wellness centre inside the Hotel Golf and the Hotel Park, sold to non-residents by the day, with water arriving around twenty-three degrees. Radovljica's old town, ten minutes by bus, packs its beekeeping and gingerbread museums into three covered streets. Further afield, Postojna Cave is under a hundred minutes away and holds ten degrees regardless of the sky.

What things cost in Lake Bled

A pletna seat is twenty euro per adult in cash, with the island church another twelve on top, and Bled Castle charges nineteen. Vintgar Gorge falls between ten and fifteen depending on ticket type.
