What's actually worth your time in Dublin

Trinity College's Book of Kells is genuinely extraordinary and genuinely two open pages, and the Long Room above it has had large numbers of volumes removed for conservation, so check the current state before paying. Kilmainham Gaol is timed, state-run and sells out well ahead. The Guinness Storehouse starts near 26 euro with a pint included. St Patrick's and Christ Church both charge admission.

What first-timers get wrong in Dublin

Bus drivers take Leap cards and contactless but give no change for cash, so exact coins or nothing. Adult fares cap automatically at 5 euro a day and 29.20 a week, which means a separate travel pass is usually pointless. Kilmainham Gaol and the Book of Kells must be booked online in advance. Tip about ten percent in restaurants and nothing at all at the bar.

What to eat in Dublin

Dublin is a pub-food and shellfish city rather than a dish city, and coddle and boxty are largely sold to visitors now. Aim instead at oysters, seafood chowder with brown soda bread, and Dublin Bay prawns. Leo Burdock has fried fish since 1913. Grogan's serves a famous toasted sandwich alongside its pints, and the Saturday food market at Temple Bar is the good version of that street.

Dublin's museums, and which one to pick

Dublin's best museums cost nothing. The National Museum of Ireland's Archaeology branch on Kildare Street holds the Iron Age bog bodies and the Ardagh Chalice; Decorative Arts sits at Collins Barracks and Natural History, the Dead Zoo, keeps its Victorian cabinets intact. The National Gallery, free as well, has Caravaggio's Taking of Christ, rediscovered in a Jesuit dining room in 1990. The Chester Beatty is also free.

Dublin after dark

The pub is the entire structure and closing is early by continental standards: roughly half eleven Sunday to Thursday, half twelve at weekends, with late bars pushing to half two. The Temple Bar pub itself charges upwards of eleven euro a pint, while Grogan's, Kehoe's, the Long Hall and the Palace Bar are five minutes away and cost far less. The Cobblestone in Smithfield runs traditional sessions.

When to go to Dublin

The month to avoid is December — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 15 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
