When the weather turns in Jodhpur

Jodhpur gets around 350 millimetres a year, almost all of it in July and August cloudbursts that last an hour and flood the old-city drains. Mehrangarh's route is largely under stone: the galleries, the Phool Mahal and Moti Mahal, and the covered ramp between the gates. Umaid Bhawan's museum wing is indoors. Otherwise the honest plan is a rooftop with a canopy and a lassi.

Jodhpur's museums, and which one to pick

Mehrangarh's galleries are the museum: palanquins, elephant howdahs, a room of miniature paintings from the Marwar school, and the Daulat Khana's turban collection, all inside the fort ticket. Umaid Bhawan is still a royal residence and a Taj hotel, so the museum wing shows only vintage cars and clocks for a separate hundred rupees. Do not expect a state museum; Jodhpur's public one in Umaid Gardens is thin.

What to eat in Jodhpur

Jodhpur eats sweet and fried. Shri Mishrilal, inside the southern gate of Sardar Market opposite the clock tower, has poured makhaniya lassi since 1960, thick enough to need a spoon. Mawa kachori is the local pastry, sugar syrup over a khoya filling. Mirchi vada, a whole green chilli battered and fried, is the street snack. Laal maas, mutton in red Mathania chillies, is the meat dish.

What's actually worth your time in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh rises 120 metres off a rock and is the rare Indian fort still owned by the family that built it; the 600-rupee foreigner ticket includes the audio guide and is the one thing here worth full price. Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph below it, takes twenty minutes. Toorji ka Jhalra, a 1740s stepwell excavated out of rubbish in the last decade, costs nothing and locals swim in it.

Jodhpur after dark

Evening here is rooftops, not bars. Restaurants above the old city stack up around Toorji ka Jhalra and the clock tower so guests can watch the fort floodlights come on, and Rajasthan's licensing keeps alcohol mostly inside hotels. Sardar Market's vegetable stalls trade loudly until about nine, then the lanes empty fast. Mehrangarh closes at five, so the illuminated fort is a view, never a visit.

When to go to Jodhpur

The month to avoid is May — around 40°C (104°F) with roughly 1 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, May the month most people skip.
