When the weather turns in St. Moritz

Ovaverva in St. Moritz Bad is the obvious fallback, a public indoor pool with a slide, a lap basin and a spa fed by the mineral springs the resort was founded on. The Mineralbad at Samedan, stacked vertically through a converted townhouse, makes the more interesting soak. Otherwise the answer is a train: the Rhaetian Railway's Bernina line to Alp Grum runs in any weather and the windows are the entire point.

St. Moritz's museums, and which one to pick

A domed stone rotunda above the village, the Segantini Museum exists to house one work: the Alpine Triptych of Life, Nature and Death that Giovanni Segantini was still painting on the Schafberg when he died in 1899. It opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes entirely between seasons, roughly April to June and again through October and November. Down the valley at Sils Maria, the Nietzsche-Haus preserves the room he rented seven summers running.

What to eat in St. Moritz

Engadiner Nusstorte, a short pastry case packed with caramelised walnuts, is what travellers carry home, and Hanselmann on Via Maistra has been selling it since 1894. Capuns, spaetzle dough rolled inside chard leaves and simmered in milk, deserves ordering in a mountain hut rather than a hotel dining room. Buendnerfleisch is air-dried beef sliced nearly transparent. Roeteli, a cherry liqueur, gets poured once the plates are cleared.

What's actually worth your time in St. Moritz

Winter puts the attraction on the lake itself: White Turf horse racing across the ice on February Sundays, snow polo in January, and a marked walking track over the frozen surface the rest of the season. The Olympia Bob Run, rebuilt from natural ice every year since 1904, sells guest descents down the track the Games used. In the village, the leaning tower is all that survives of a church pulled down in 1893.

St. Moritz after dark

Nightlife is a winter proposition and priced accordingly. The King's Club beneath Badrutt's Palace claims to be Switzerland's first discotheque, opened in 1963, and still runs a door policy; the Dracula Club above the lake admits members and their guests. Roo Bar at the Hotel Hauser is where people drink after skiing without changing clothes. Come May, and again in November, most of the village simply shuts its doors.

When to go to St. Moritz

The month to avoid is January — around -2°C (28°F) with roughly 11 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
