What first-timers get wrong in Abu Dhabi

The Grand Mosque enforces its dress code at the gate: hair, wrists and ankles covered for women, no shorts for men. Abayas are lent free of charge, but the queue for them grows long before sunset, so book a time slot online and arrive early. Non-worshipping visitors are turned away on Friday mornings. Abu Dhabi is ninety minutes from Dubai and does not substitute for it.

What things cost in Abu Dhabi

Entry to the Grand Mosque is free, which is unusual for a region's headline sight. Louvre Abu Dhabi is around AED 65 and Qasr Al Watan is priced similarly, while a Ferrari World day pass runs into the hundreds. A metered taxi across the island costs AED 20 to 40, karak chai one or two dirhams, and machboos in a local canteen thirty to forty-five.

What to eat in Abu Dhabi

Emirati home cooking is considerably easier to eat here than in Dubai, with Meylas and Al Mrzab serving machboos, harees and balaleet to Emirati families rather than tourists. Al Dhafra runs dinner from a dhow off the corniche. Hamdan Street and the old Tourist Club area keep the Keralan and Pakistani canteens going. Karak chai from a drive-through window is the daily ritual.

Abu Dhabi with kids, realistically

Formula Rossa at Ferrari World is the fastest rollercoaster in the world and sits under the same roof as rides built for four-year-olds. Warner Bros World is completely enclosed and air-conditioned, which is the entire point in July. Yas Waterworld covers the rest. Louvre Abu Dhabi runs a dedicated Children's Museum. Nothing is walkable between sites, so plan on taxis, which are metered and inexpensive.

When the weather turns in Abu Dhabi

Measurable rain falls on a handful of days a year, so this is really a heat plan for June through September and a fog plan in winter, when morning mist closes roads far more often than storms do.
