The neighborhoods at a glance

Downtown & the Corniche (Al Markaziyah)

Known for the traditional city center — the 8km waterfront promenade, malls, business towers and easy access to the Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan.

Saadiyat Island

Known for Louvre Abu Dhabi, a Blue Flag beach and the emerging Saadiyat Cultural District — the calmer, design-led island.

Yas Island

Known for Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, the Yas Marina F1 circuit and Yas Mall — the entertainment island.

Al Maryah Island / Al Reem Island

Known for the newer financial and residential districts — The Galleria mall, waterfront dining and business hotels.

Know before you go

Currency

UAE dirham (AED), pegged to the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis; carry some cash for small vendors and tips.

Language

Arabic is official; English is the everyday language of tourism, signage and business — you will rarely need Arabic.

From the airport

Zayed International Airport (AUH) is roughly 30–40 minutes from downtown by taxi or car. Dubai (DXB) is a further ~1.5-hour drive if you’re combining both cities.

Getting around

There is no metro. Metered taxis are affordable and plentiful; Careem and Uber both operate. Many visitors rent a car given the distances between islands. Distances are bigger than they look on a map — budget 20–40 minutes between Downtown, Saadiyat and Yas.

Best time

October–April is the sweet spot: warm, dry and comfortable for outdoor time. May–September brings extreme heat (40°C+), so plan indoor malls, museums and water parks then, not walking tours.

Dress, alcohol & tipping

Dress modestly in public (shoulders/knees covered is safest), and expect a strict dress code at the Grand Mosque. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars — not in ordinary shops. Tipping ~10% is appreciated and sometimes already added as a service charge.
