Australian dollar (A$). Contactless card/phone tap is accepted almost everywhere, including public transport — cash is rarely needed.

English.

From the airport

Sydney Airport (SYD) has domestic (T2/T3) and international (T1) terminals linked by the Airport Link train — about 13 minutes to Central/the CBD, though the station carries an access fee on top of the normal fare. Taxis and rideshare are straightforward alternatives.

Getting around

An Opal card or a contactless bank card/phone covers trains, buses, light rail and the harbour ferries under one tap-on/tap-off system, with daily fare capping. A car is unnecessary in the city and only useful for the Blue Mountains or Hunter Valley.

Best time

Sept–Nov (spring) and Mar–May (autumn) are excellent shoulder seasons — mild and less crowded. Dec–Feb (summer) is peak: hot, beach season, Christmas/New Year and school holidays make it the busiest and priciest window. Jun–Aug (winter) is mild by most standards and includes Vivid Sydney, the light and music festival, from late May into mid-June.

Tipping

Not expected. Rounding up or adding roughly 10% for great restaurant service is a nice gesture, not an obligation.
