The neighborhoods at a glance

North Goa — Baga, Calangute, Candolim

Known for the busiest beaches, shacks, water sports and the biggest choice of budget-to-mid stays.

North Goa — Anjuna, Vagator, Assagao

Known for the flea market, cliff sunsets, trendy cafés and boutique villas in leafy Assagao.

North Goa — Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem

Known for quieter, chic “new North” sands — yoga, beach lounges and calmer water.

South Goa — Palolem & Agonda

Know before you go

Currency

Indian rupee (₹). Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants; carry cash for shacks, scooters, markets and small vendors. UPI is everywhere if you can set it up.

Language

Konkani is local; Hindi and English are widely spoken and understood across tourist areas.

From the airports

Two airports: Dabolim (GOI) in the centre-south, and the newer Manohar/Mopa (GOX) in the far north. Pick your beach first — Mopa is far closer to the North, Dabolim to the South. Use the prepaid taxi counter or a pre-booked cab.

Getting around

Most visitors rent a scooter (cheap, freedom) or use taxis/app cabs. There is no metro; local buses are slow. Distances North↔South are longer than the map suggests — 1.5–2.5 hours.

Best time

Nov–Feb is peak: warm, dry, every shack open. Mar–May is hot. The Jun–Sep monsoon is lush and cheap but many beach shacks and water sports close.

Alcohol & tipping

Alcohol is legal, cheap and sold openly (Goa is famously relaxed). Tipping ~5–10% is appreciated at restaurants; round up for shack service and drivers.
