Abu Dhabi hotels: how to choose
An Abu Dhabi hotel choice is mostly about which island — then matching the property to your trip style. The range runs from practical business hotels downtown to some of the region’s most lavish resorts on Saadiyat and Yas. Here’s how to read it before you book.
What hotels are like, by area
Downtown & the Corniche
Business and city hotels, from reliable mid-range chains to a few grand waterfront five-stars (including the landmark Emirates Palace); walkable to the Corniche promenade.
Nightly feel: Budget-to-high; the flagship waterfront properties sit well above the rest.
Saadiyat Island
Beach resorts with private sand, pools and spa facilities, plus a few design-hotel options near the museums.
Nightly feel: High; this is where Abu Dhabi’s resort pricing concentrates.
Yas Island
Large theme-park-adjacent resorts (some literally inside Ferrari World or overlooking the F1 circuit), plus mid-range options near Yas Mall.
Nightly feel: Mid-to-high; spikes sharply during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.
Al Maryah / Al Reem Island
Newer business and lifestyle hotels attached to The Galleria mall and waterfront towers.
Nightly feel: Mid; competitive rates outside major events.
What surprises first-time hotel bookers
- Most hotel bills add a municipality fee, a per-night tourism/destination fee and a service charge on top of the room rate — check whether quoted prices are net or gross before comparing.
- Season and events drive price far more than star rating: the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (Yas Marina Circuit, typically late November/early December) can multiply Yas Island rates for that weekend alone.
- Alcohol is only served where a hotel or venue holds a license — most mid-range and up city hotels do, but confirm if it matters to your evening plans.
- A “beachfront” claim on Saadiyat usually means genuine private sand; downtown “sea view” often means the Corniche road and breakwater, not a swimmable beach.
- Summer (Jun–Sep) rates drop noticeably given the heat — a good time for a mall-and-pool city break if you don’t mind staying indoors by day.
- Distances matter more than the address looks on a map — confirm which island a hotel is actually on before assuming it’s “near” a sight on another one.
When to book
For the Oct–Apr peak, book 1–3 months ahead; the Grand Prix weekend and major holidays (Eid, New Year) sell out first and cost the most by far. Shoulder months (Oct, Apr) are cheaper and still comfortable outdoors. Prefer free-cancellation rates so you can re-book if a lower price appears closer to the date.
