Ask for the Ticino Ticket at check-in. It comes free with any night booked in the canton and covers buses, trains and funiculars across Ticino, plus reductions on the lake boats, so buying transport separately is money thrown away. The railway station stands above the town, linked to Piazza Cioccaro by a short funicular; the stairs are brutal with luggage. Italian is the working language, and boat timetables thin sharply outside summer.
What things cost in Lugano
A Monte Bre funicular return sits in the twenties, cut by thirty percent with the Ticino Ticket. MASI charges about CHF 20 and Swissminiatur a little more for adults. A grotto dinner of polenta and brasato with a half-litre carafe of Merlot lands between CHF 35 and 45, noticeably cheaper than the equivalent in Zurich. Lugano with kids, realistically
Swissminiatur at Melide, ten minutes down the lake by train, lays out more than a hundred Swiss buildings at one twenty-fifth scale with model trains threading between them, and it shuts for winter. Splash e Spa at Rivera is the indoor water park. Parco Ciani has a proper playground and lawn right on the water, with the Lido and its shallow pool alongside. Funiculars take pushchairs without argument.
What to eat in Lugano
Ticino cooks Italian but drinks its own: Merlot planted after phylloxera destroyed the older vines, poured from a ceramic boccalino, with a white version pressed from those same red grapes. Meals happen in grotti, stone taverns cut into hillsides for cold storage, serving polenta with brasato or rabbit, luganighe sausage and soft formaggini. Grotto della Salute is walkable from the centre; the Gandria ones sit on the water. Torta di pane closes things.
Lugano after dark
Evenings here are a piazza rather than a scene. Riforma's cafes keep chairs under the arcades until around midnight, and the bars behind them in the Quartiere Maghetti take the later crowd. Foce, where the Cassarate meets the lake, holds the few real clubs and the summer open-airs.
