What first-timers get wrong in San Sebastián
Do not help yourself from the counter platters everywhere, since cold pintxos are self-service in some bars and ordered in others, and the good things are chalked up and cooked to order. You keep a verbal tally and pay on leaving. Dbus singles are 1.95 euros. The narrow-gauge Topo to Hendaye leaves from its own station, not the mainline one, and is the cheap route to France.
What things cost in San Sebastián
San Telmo is ten euros, free on Tuesdays and free under twenty-five; the Aquarium around fourteen. A dbus single costs 1.95 euros and the night Búho fare 2.65. Pintxos run 2.50 to 4 each with a zurito of beer or a glass of txakoli near 2, so four bars and eight bites lands close to 30. The Igueldo funicular return is a few euros.
San Sebastián with kids, realistically
The bay does the childcare: La Concha is shallow, sheltered and lifeguarded, and Ondarreta at its western end is calmer still. Zurriola over in Gros has rips and suits teenagers rather than toddlers. The Aquarium and the Eureka science museum cover indoor hours. Monte Igueldo's century-old rides, including a water toboggan and a little mountain train, are aimed squarely at under-tens.
What to eat in San Sebastián
Pintxos are not tapas: you order them one at a time at the counter, and the hot ones come off the blackboard cooked to order rather than sitting under glass. The gilda, anchovy with guindilla pepper and olive on a stick, was invented at Casa Vallés. Ganbara does mushrooms, Txepetxa anchovies, Bar Néstor one tortilla at one o'clock, and La Viña baked the burnt cheesecake everybody now copies.
San Sebastián after dark
The evening is a txikiteo, one pintxo and one small drink per bar before moving on, worked outward through the Parte Vieja's grid from Calle 31 de Agosto. Txakoli gets poured from a height to raise its fizz. Bars run to about three, and Gros across the Urumea holds the younger, surfier crowd. Semana Grande in August puts an international fireworks contest over the bay nightly.
