The 1912 funicular up Monte Igueldo reaches a gloriously shabby old amusement park, while Monte Urgull, climbed on foot and free, gives the better view back over the bay. Chillida's Peine del Viento bolts three rusted steel claws into rock at the western end and blows seawater through vents underfoot.
When the weather turns in San Sebastián
This coast is properly wet, near a hundred and fifty rainy days a year, and the city is built accordingly: the Parte Vieja's lanes are narrow enough to run a pintxo crawl half-sheltered. San Sebastián's museums, and which one to pick
San Telmo Museoa is built into a sixteenth-century Dominican convent with a Sert-muralled church, and covers Basque society rather than art alone: ten euros general, free for under-twenty-fives, free for everyone on Tuesdays, closed Mondays. The Aquarium on the harbour keeps a shark tunnel and the whale skeleton from the city's whaling centuries. Tabakalera, a converted tobacco factory over in Egia, shows contemporary work for nothing.
