What to eat in Agra
Agra's sweet is petha, translucent ash-gourd candy sold plain or in angoori and kesar versions along Hari Parvat and through Sadar Bazaar, where Panchhi Petha is the name everyone repeats. Mughlai cooking here means galouti and seekh kebabs and korma, done best in the old-city lanes near Jama Masjid. Breakfast is bedai with aloo sabzi and jalebi, not a hotel buffet.
What first-timers get wrong in Agra
The Taj closes every Friday without exception for congregational prayer, and this catches out more visitors than anything else. Foreigner entry is 1,300 rupees, valid three hours from the moment you scan in, with a 200-rupee mausoleum supplement. Tripods, drones, food and large bags are refused at security. Only battery buses and rickshaws reach the gates, because fuel vehicles are banned within 500 metres.
Agra after dark
Agra effectively has none, and it is better to plan around that than be disappointed by it. The Taj shuts at sunset, the old city empties, and the evening comes down to hotel restaurants, the nightly Mohabbat the Taj show at Kalakriti theatre, and Sadar Bazaar's shops and street food until roughly 22:00. Most travellers treat the city as a single overnight and move on.
Agra with kids, realistically
The Taj complex is vast and shadeless, and the queues in April-to-June heat punish small children, so aim for opening time. Strollers are allowed inside the grounds but security screening is slow and all food is banned. Agra Fort's ramps handle wheels better than the Taj plinth's stairs.
