What's actually worth your time in Agra

The Taj Mahal is the rare monument that survives its own hype, best at sunrise, and worth the extra 200 rupees to enter the mausoleum chamber itself. Agra Fort, ten minutes away, is the underrated one: red sandstone ramparts and the marble Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan was imprisoned within sight of the Taj. Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna is a sunset photo stop. Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km west, needs half a day.

Agra's museums, and which one to pick

Agra is monument country rather than museum country. The Taj Museum inside the west garden gate holds original Mughal building drawings, celadon plates said to crack on contact with poison, and portraits of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. It is free with your Taj ticket and nearly always empty. The Archaeological Museum inside Agra Fort displays recovered sculpture. Both want 30 minutes, not an afternoon.

What first-timers get wrong in Agra

The Taj closes every Friday without exception for congregational prayer, and this catches out more visitors than anything else. Foreigner entry is 1,300 rupees, valid three hours from the moment you scan in, with a 200-rupee mausoleum supplement. Tripods, drones, food and large bags are refused at security. Only battery buses and rickshaws reach the gates, because fuel vehicles are banned within 500 metres.

When the weather turns in Agra

Monsoon arrives in July and August as short heavy bursts, and a wet Taj is genuinely a good visit, with thinner crowds and marble that turns luminous under a dark sky. If it settles in, the Taj Museum, the Agra Fort galleries and a marble-inlay workshop demonstration keep you covered, and Kalakriti's theatre is indoors. The greater risk is fog: December and January mornings routinely hide the Taj entirely.

What things cost in Agra

Taj Mahal foreigner entry costs 1,300 rupees plus 200 for the mausoleum, and Agra Fort is 650 rupees, dropping to 600 on Fridays. A thali at a local dhaba runs 150 to 300 rupees and a box of Panchhi petha around 200 to 300. An auto-rickshaw across the city negotiates to 150 to 250 rupees. Uber and Ola both operate and undercut hotel taxis.

When to go to Agra

The month to avoid is June — around 39°C (102°F) with roughly 8 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, June the month most people skip.
