What's actually worth your time in Playa del Carmen
Quinta Avenida is the spine, some thirty pedestrian blocks of shops and touts that thins out and improves north of Calle 20. Playa Mamitas and Punta Esmeralda, where a freshwater spring meets the sea at the northern end, are the beaches residents actually use. Cozumel is a thirty-five minute ferry from the pier at the foot of the Quinta. Xcaret is a full paid day, not a quick stop.
What to eat in Playa del Carmen
El Fogon on Avenida 30 is where residents queue for al pastor carved straight off the trompo, and the second branch keeps later hours. North of Calle 30 the taquerias price in pesos rather than dollars. Street carts sell marquesitas and elotes near Parque Fundadores through the evening. The Quinta's beachfront terraces are largely pizza and fajitas at resort markups.

The Cozumel ferry is the single biggest line item at roughly 320 pesos each way per adult. Colectivos reach Tulum for about 50 pesos and Cancun for around 60.
