The Cozumel ferry is the single biggest line item at roughly 320 pesos each way per adult. Colectivos reach Tulum for about 50 pesos and Cancun for around 60. A taco plate north of Calle 30 stays well under 150 pesos, while the same on the Quinta beachfront runs 350 upward. Beach access is free everywhere; you pay only if you want a lounger and a waiter.
What's actually worth your time in Playa del Carmen
Quinta Avenida is the spine, some thirty pedestrian blocks of shops and touts that thins out and improves north of Calle 20. Playa Mamitas and Punta Esmeralda, where a freshwater spring meets the sea at the northern end, are the beaches residents actually use. Cozumel is a thirty-five minute ferry from the pier at the foot of the Quinta. Xcaret is a full paid day, not a quick stop.
When the weather turns in Playa del Carmen
Quinta Alegria and Paseo del Carmen are air-conditioned malls at either end of the Quinta, both with cinemas showing subtitled originals. Rio Secreto, twenty minutes south, is a guided underground river through a dry cave system where weather is irrelevant. Cenote Azul and Cristalino off the highway stay swimmable. Skip the ferry in heavy weather, because Ultramar cancels crossings when the channel gets rough.
What first-timers get wrong in Playa del Carmen
Touts on the Quinta offer free tours and cheap tequila to funnel you into timeshare presentations, and a flat no while walking works. Use bank-branch ATMs rather than the standalone machines along the Quinta, and always decline the machine's own currency conversion. Playa del Carmen's museums, and which one to pick
Playa's museums are commercial rather than scholarly: the 3D Museum of Wonders and the Frida Kahlo exhibit on the Quinta trade in photo backdrops and reproductions rather than originals. For a genuine collection, take the ferry, since Cozumel's Museo de la Isla covers reef ecology and island history in a converted hotel on the malecon. Otherwise the region's real museums are in Merida, several hours west.
