What first-timers get wrong in Bern

Guests staying in registered city accommodation receive the Bern Ticket free from the first night, covering Libero zones 100 and 101 plus the Gurten and Marzili funiculars and the lift to the Minster platform, so ask at check-in instead of buying fares. Floating the Aare looks casual and is not: the current is fast and the marked exit handrails are the only safe way out.

What things cost in Bern

Because the Bern Ticket makes local transport free for overnight guests, most spending goes on food. A Berner Platte for two runs CHF 55 to 70, an old-town lunch menu CHF 22 to 28, and Munster tower entry about CHF 5. BarenPark, the eleven Renaissance fountains, the arcades and the Marzili riverside baths all cost nothing at all.

What to eat in Bern

Berner Platte is the local argument for excess, piling smoked pork, sausage, bacon, beef tongue and beans onto one board built for sharing. Order it in the painted vaults of the Kornhauskeller or the older Klotzlikeller. Zibelemarit, the onion market held the fourth Monday of November, fills the streets with onion tart and confetti. Markthalle beside the station handles quick lunches.

Bern with kids, realistically

Bears visible for free, a river the whole city swims in, and trams that swallow prams without complaint. The Gurten funicular from Wabern reaches a summit park with a miniature railway and a toboggan run. Creaviva inside Zentrum Paul Klee is a hands-on studio built for children. The free Marzili lido on the Aare runs 23 May to 13 September in 2026.

When the weather turns in Bern

The arcades are an answer no other Swiss city has: you can cross the entire old town, shop and eat without stepping into the wet. Beyond them the Bernisches Historisches Museum with its Einstein Museum, Kunstmuseum Bern and Zentrum Paul Klee all sit indoors, and the Bundeshaus runs free guided tours when parliament is not sitting, booked ahead with ID.

When to go to Bern

The month to avoid is December — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
