When the weather turns in Bern

The arcades are an answer no other Swiss city has: you can cross the entire old town, shop and eat without stepping into the wet. Beyond them the Bernisches Historisches Museum with its Einstein Museum, Kunstmuseum Bern and Zentrum Paul Klee all sit indoors, and the Bundeshaus runs free guided tours when parliament is not sitting, booked ahead with ID.

Bern's museums, and which one to pick

Zentrum Paul Klee, Renzo Piano's three steel waves east of the centre, holds roughly four thousand Klee works and rotates a small share at a time; it closes Mondays, as does Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland's oldest permanent collection and recipient of the Gurlitt bequest. The Einstein Haus at Kramgasse 49 is the flat where he wrote the 1905 papers: small, cheap and shut for part of winter.

What to eat in Bern

Berner Platte is the local argument for excess, piling smoked pork, sausage, bacon, beef tongue and beans onto one board built for sharing. Order it in the painted vaults of the Kornhauskeller or the older Klotzlikeller. Zibelemarit, the onion market held the fourth Monday of November, fills the streets with onion tart and confetti. Markthalle beside the station handles quick lunches.

What's actually worth your time in Bern

Six kilometres of covered arcades thread a UNESCO old town wrapped inside a bend of the Aare, so most sightseeing here is simply walking. The Zytglogge's mechanical figures perform four minutes before each hour and the tower interior can only be seen on a guided tour. BarenPark is free and open around the clock, keepers on duty eight to five. The Munster tower is 344 steps.

Bern after dark

The scene splits three ways: cellar bars carved into medieval vaults under the Old Town, the Lorraine and Breitenrain quarters across the river, and Reitschule, a graffiti-covered former riding school running as an autonomous cultural centre since 1987 and unlike anything in Zurich. Shops shut around seven and Sunday is dead, but bars run late Thursday through Saturday.

When to go to Bern

The month to avoid is December — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
