Montreux with kids, realistically

Rochers-de-Naye keeps a marmot park with several burrowing species near the summit station, and every December the same mountain hosts a Father Christmas house reachable only by cog train. Across the water at Le Bouveret, Swiss Vapeur Parc runs rideable miniature steam locomotives and Aquaparc has indoor slides. The CGN paddle steamers delight boat-minded children; several were built before 1920 and still run under steam.

When the weather turns in Montreux

Chillon is largely roofed, so the great halls, chapel and dungeon carry a downpour perfectly well provided you skip the courtyards. Chaplin's World is wholly indoors and takes three hours honestly. The Nest, Nestle's museum in the company's original Vevey building, traces milk powder and instant coffee. For a wet afternoon that turns into a good one, the thermal baths at Lavey-les-Bains are forty minutes up the Rhone valley.

Chillon costs CHF 15 for adults and is covered outright by the Swiss Travel Pass. The cog railway to Rochers-de-Naye is around CHF 72 return, roughly half with a pass. Filets de perche in a lakeside brasserie approaches CHF 35, and more when the perch is genuinely local. A glass of Lavaux Chasselas is near CHF 6. The Queen exhibition charges nothing, though the donation box deserves something.

What to eat in Montreux

Filets de perche with lemon and chips is the lake standard, though most kitchens use perch flown in from Eastern Europe, so ask whether it is du lac and expect to pay for a yes. Papet vaudois stews leeks with potato around a saucisson vaudois that must be boiled, never grilled.
