What's actually worth your time in Montreux

Chillon is the ticket that earns itself, a castle set on a rock island where the lake floor drops away, with Byron's name scratched into a dungeon pillar in 1816. Walk out along the lakeside path in about forty minutes rather than waiting for the bus. The Freddie Mercury statue on the quay is a photograph and nothing more. Behind the town, a cog railway grinds up to Rochers-de-Naye at 2,042 metres.

Montreux after dark

For sixteen days each July the Jazz Festival annexes the waterfront, with paying halls inside the Congress Centre and free stages on the quay and in the park running from mid-afternoon to nearly dawn. The other eleven months Montreux is a quiet, elderly, early-to-bed place where the Casino Barriere and a few hotel bars constitute the whole offer, and the last lakeside trains decide when the evening ends.

Montreux's museums, and which one to pick

Queen: The Studio Experience sits inside the Casino Barriere and asks only a donation to the Mercury Phoenix Trust; it is the genuine Mountain Studios control room where the band's final vocals were recorded. Chaplin's World at Corsier-sur-Vevey, fifteen minutes along the shore, occupies the manor he lived in for twenty-five years and is the strongest museum on this coast. Vevey adds the Alimentarium, and La Tour-de-Peilz a museum of games.

Montreux with kids, realistically

Rochers-de-Naye keeps a marmot park with several burrowing species near the summit station, and every December the same mountain hosts a Father Christmas house reachable only by cog train. Across the water at Le Bouveret, Swiss Vapeur Parc runs rideable miniature steam locomotives and Aquaparc has indoor slides. The CGN paddle steamers delight boat-minded children; several were built before 1920 and still run under steam.

When the weather turns in Montreux

Chillon is largely roofed, so the great halls, chapel and dungeon carry a downpour perfectly well provided you skip the courtyards. Chaplin's World is wholly indoors and takes three hours honestly. The Nest, Nestle's museum in the company's original Vevey building, traces milk powder and instant coffee. For a wet afternoon that turns into a good one, the thermal baths at Lavey-les-Bains are forty minutes up the Rhone valley.

When to go to Montreux

The month to avoid is January — around 7°C (45°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
