The railway station is on the far shore, so arriving by train means the small Stefanie ferry, which is timed to meet trains and stops running in the evening. Coaches are held to booked time slots and groups over ten must register in advance, which is why independent visitors get in more easily than expected. Come before nine or after five, and leave the drone at home.
What's actually worth your time in Hallstatt
The salt mine above the village is the oldest known anywhere, and after a long closure it reopened on 29 August 2026 alongside a new funicular: 49 euros buys the combined ride and mine tour, 29 the funicular alone. The Skywalk platform juts out over the lake from the mountain station. The Beinhaus in St Michael's chapel holds hundreds of hand-painted skulls for a couple of euros.
What to eat in Hallstatt
Lake trout and char, grilled whole or smoked, appear on nearly every menu and are the honest local dish; Restaurant zum Salzbaron and the Seehotel Gruner Baum terrace both do them properly. Kitchens close early, often by eight or nine. Reindling, a sweet cinnamon yeast cake, turns up in the bakeries. Carry cash, because several smaller places still prefer it.

Weather closes in on this lake constantly, so plan for it. The mine sits at constant temperature underground and does not care, and the Dachstein caves at Obertraun, a giant ice cave and a mammoth cave, are a short bus ride away and equally indifferent. The Hallstatt Museum fills an hour. Beyond that it is a cafe window over grey water.
