What's actually worth your time in Hallstatt

The salt mine above the village is the oldest known anywhere, and after a long closure it reopened on 29 August 2026 alongside a new funicular: 49 euros buys the combined ride and mine tour, 29 the funicular alone. The Skywalk platform juts out over the lake from the mountain station. The Beinhaus in St Michael's chapel holds hundreds of hand-painted skulls for a couple of euros.

Hallstatt after dark

There is essentially none, and that is precisely the argument for staying overnight. Once the last coaches and evening trains have gone, roughly seven hundred residents get the lakefront back and the village is quiet by ten. A few hotel bars and the Braugasthof terrace stay open. Day-trippers who linger risk missing the last ferry back across to the station.

What things cost in Hallstatt

Mine plus funicular is 49 euros for adults and 23 for children four to fifteen; the funicular alone is 29 and 14; hikers who walk up pay 33 and 16 for the mine. The Beinhaus costs a couple of euros. Grilled lake fish with a side runs 18 to 26 euros, and the ferry crossing is a few euros each way.

Hallstatt's museums, and which one to pick

The Hallstatt Museum on Seestrasse explains why an Iron Age culture spanning half of Europe carries this village's name: the prehistoric salt workings preserved bodies, tools and textiles in enough detail to date an entire period. It is small, clearly labelled and takes about an hour. Everything else worth seeing here is outdoors or underground rather than behind glass.

What to eat in Hallstatt

Lake trout and char, grilled whole or smoked, appear on nearly every menu and are the honest local dish; Restaurant zum Salzbaron and the Seehotel Gruner Baum terrace both do them properly. Kitchens close early, often by eight or nine. Reindling, a sweet cinnamon yeast cake, turns up in the bakeries. Carry cash, because several smaller places still prefer it.

When to go to Hallstatt

The month to avoid is January — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 17 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
