Berlin after dark

Clubs here do not really begin until after midnight and many run continuously into Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, which makes a Sunday daytime set a normal plan rather than an oddity. Berghain's door is famously selective and phone cameras get stickered over inside. Bars have no legal closing hour at all. Neukolln and Kreuzberg carry the bar scene, RAW-Gelande the rougher end, Sisyphos the outdoor one.

What to eat in Berlin

Currywurst is a Berlin invention, defended at Konnopke's Imbiss under the elevated U2 tracks at Eberswalder Strasse and at Curry 36 on Mehringdamm. The doner as served here was shaped by Turkish Berliners in the 1970s. Maybachufer hosts a Turkish market on Tuesdays and Fridays; Dong Xuan Center in Lichtenberg is a Vietnamese wholesale hall with canteens. Markthalle Neun runs Street Food Thursday in Kreuzberg.

What's actually worth your time in Berlin

The Reichstag dome is free but needs online registration days ahead, and it is the better view than the paid TV Tower. Brandenburg Gate is a five-minute stop. Skip the Checkpoint Charlie theatre for the Bernauer Strasse memorial, the only site preserving both walls and the death strip between them. East Side Gallery runs 1.3 kilometres of painted Wall. Tempelhofer Feld lets you walk a decommissioned runway.

Berlin with kids, realistically

Berlin runs two separate zoos, the compact Zoo Berlin at Tiergarten and the far larger Tierpark in the east. The Naturkundemuseum's Brachiosaurus is the tallest mounted dinosaur skeleton anywhere. Tempelhofer Feld is unrivalled for scooters and kites because it is literally an airfield. The city is flat with broad pavements, so strollers work well; S-Bahn stations are more reliably lift-equipped than older U-Bahn ones.

When the weather turns in Berlin

Five museums sit in one block on Museum Island, so you can move between them with minimal exposure. KaDeWe's sixth-floor food hall, Bikini Berlin's covered galleries and the Deutsches Technikmuseum's aircraft hangars all eat hours. Spree sightseeing boats run glassed-in through winter. Berlin also keeps grand municipal swimming halls, and Stadtbad Neukolln's 1914 tiled basilica is an experience rather than a lap pool.

When to go to Berlin

The month to avoid is December — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 13 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
