The Reichstag dome is free but needs online registration days ahead, and it is the better view than the paid TV Tower. Brandenburg Gate is a five-minute stop. Skip the Checkpoint Charlie theatre for the Bernauer Strasse memorial, the only site preserving both walls and the death strip between them. East Side Gallery runs 1.3 kilometres of painted Wall. Tempelhofer Feld lets you walk a decommissioned runway.

Berlin's museums, and which one to pick

The Pergamon has been shut since October 2023 and its Hellenistic halls are not due back until June 2027, so the Asisi Panorama opposite Museum Island substitutes for the altar. Nefertiti is in the Neues Museum; the Alte Nationalgalerie holds Friedrich and Menzel; the Gemaldegalerie sits away from the island at the Kulturforum. Topography of Terror charges nothing. State museums close Mondays.

What first-timers get wrong in Berlin

There are no ticket barriers on the U-Bahn, which fools people; inspectors board in plain clothes and the penalty fare is 60 euro. Paper tickets must be stamped in the yellow validator before boarding. Almost every shop closes on Sunday, leaving Spatis and station outlets. Plenty of Imbiss counters and older bars still take only cash. Tip by stating the rounded-up total as you hand over money.

When the weather turns in Berlin

Five museums sit in one block on Museum Island, so you can move between them with minimal exposure. KaDeWe's sixth-floor food hall, Bikini Berlin's covered galleries and the Deutsches Technikmuseum's aircraft hangars all eat hours. Spree sightseeing boats run glassed-in through winter. Berlin also keeps grand municipal swimming halls, and Stadtbad Neukolln's 1914 tiled basilica is an experience rather than a lap pool.

What things cost in Berlin

A 24-hour ticket for zones AB costs 11.20 euro in 2026, or 7.40 reduced, and the day now runs 24 hours from validation rather than to midnight. Currywurst with chips lands around three to four euro and a doner five to seven. Museum Island sells a combined day ticket that beats paying per building. Beer in a Kreuzberg bar is cheaper than in almost any western capital.

When to go to Berlin

The month to avoid is December — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 13 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
