Piazza Maggiore, the Neptune fountain, and Santo Stefano's cluster of seven linked churches carry the rest.

Bologna with kids, realistically

Stroller wheels run well under the porticoes and badly on the porphyry cobbles between them. The Museo per la Memoria di Ustica, a hangar around a reconstructed airliner wreck, is too heavy for young children; steer instead to the science rooms of Palazzo Poggi and the clock-mechanism tour inside the Torre dell'Orologio on Piazza Maggiore, which lands best with over-eights.

Bologna is the European city actually built for this. You can move from the station through the centre, eat, shop, and reach San Luca on its hill almost entirely under roof, because the porticoes are continuous and UNESCO-listed since 2021.
