What first-timers get wrong in Bologna
Do not build an itinerary around the towers, because both are closed. Book the anatomical theatre and any Torre Prendiparte climb ahead, since capacity is tiny. Coperto, a per-head cover charge, appears on nearly every restaurant bill here and is not a tip. The Marconi Express monorail from the airport is quick but priced well above the ordinary city bus alongside it.
What's actually worth your time in Bologna
The headline climb is gone: Torre degli Asinelli has been shut since October 2023 and the visibly leaning Garisenda is wrapped for stabilisation with no reopening date, with estimates running toward 2028. Substitute the terraces of San Petronio, or the 3.8-kilometre covered portico climbing to San Luca under 666 arches. Piazza Maggiore, the Neptune fountain, and Santo Stefano's cluster of seven linked churches carry the rest.
What things cost in Bologna
Museum entry is modest by Italian standards, and MAMbo undercuts comparable galleries in Milan or Florence. Tagliatelle al ragù in a Pratello osteria runs roughly €10 to €14, and mortadella by the etto is a couple of euro. The Asinelli climb, back when it operated, cost only €5, which tells you the pricing culture. Aperitivo plates are generous and often replace dinner.
Bologna with kids, realistically
Stroller wheels run well under the porticoes and badly on the porphyry cobbles between them. The Museo per la Memoria di Ustica, a hangar around a reconstructed airliner wreck, is too heavy for young children; steer instead to the science rooms of Palazzo Poggi and the clock-mechanism tour inside the Torre dell'Orologio on Piazza Maggiore, which lands best with over-eights.
