What to eat in Edinburgh

Cullen skink, a thick smoked haddock and potato soup, is the other thing to order. Scotch pies come from bakeries, and the deep-fried Mars bar is a joke sold onward to tourists. Stockbridge Market runs Sundays. For whisky, the Bow Bar pours better than the visitor attractions.

What's actually worth your time in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle is 21.50 online against 24 at the gate, and the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and the twelfth-century St Margaret's Chapel earn it; the One O'Clock Gun fires every day but Sunday. Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano climbed free in about forty-five minutes from Holyrood. Calton Hill gives the postcard skyline. The Royal Mile's tartan shops are scenery, not shopping.

Edinburgh with kids, realistically

Camera Obscura beside the Castle stacks five floors of optical illusions and mirror mazes and reliably absorbs a whole wet afternoon. Dynamic Earth sits by Holyrood, and the free National Museum's science galleries are hands-on. Edinburgh Zoo does a daily penguin parade. Note the split: the Old Town is closes, wynds and steep cobbles that punish prams, while the New Town's Georgian grid is flat and straightforward.

When the weather turns in Edinburgh

The weather here comes sideways with wind, so umbrellas invert on the Mound and a hood is the local answer. Free indoor anchors are the National Museum and both national galleries. The Real Mary King's Close and the South Bridge Vaults are literally underground streets. Camera Obscura and the Museum of Childhood on the Royal Mile handle children while the front passes.
