Alko, the state liquor monopoly, keeps weekday hours until nine and Saturday hours until six, and does not trade at all on Sundays.

What to eat in Helsinki

Karelian pies, rye crusts filled with rice porridge and eaten with egg butter, are a bakery staple rather than a restaurant dish. The Kauppatori stalls fry vendace, the small lake fish, whole in summer. The Old Market Hall on the quay sells salmon soup and reindeer. Weekday lunch buffets are where the value sits, and Finns drink more coffee per head than anyone.

What's actually worth your time in Helsinki

Suomenlinna, the sea fortress spread over six islands, is reached by an HSL ferry that your ordinary transit ticket already covers, so there is no separate boat fare to buy. Temppeliaukio, blasted into bedrock under a copper coil ceiling, charges admission and earns it. The white Cathedral steps are a photo stop. Loyly's seaside sauna and the wooden Allas Sea Pool are sights you take part in.

Helsinki with kids, realistically

Every tram and bus is low-floor, and an adult pushing a pram travels free, a rule that genuinely changes what a family day costs. Linnanmaki amusement park charges nothing to enter and sells ride tickets separately. Suomenlinna suits running-around ages, though its ramparts have unfenced drops. Heureka science centre out in Vantaa lets children crank and press nearly everything, and works best from six to twelve.

When the weather turns in Helsinki

Cold rain is the default for half the year, so the city is built around it. Oodi's free upper floor has beanbags, 3D printers and a view over Parliament. Amos Rex is entirely underground. Kamppi and Forum connect by tunnel, and Loyly or Kotiharjun Sauna, the last traditional public wood-heated sauna in the city, turn bad weather into the whole point.

The month to avoid is January — around 0°C (32°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
