What first-timers get wrong in Auckland
Auckland is not compact — the isthmus sprawls, and the airport bus takes an hour into town. Get an AT HOP card on arrival; paper fares cost noticeably more and the card caps daily spend. Waiheke ferry tickets and the island's own bus network are separate purchases unless you buy the combined pass. Motorway traffic through Spaghetti Junction will defeat whatever schedule you made.
What's actually worth your time in Auckland
Rangitoto's lava cone, thrown up roughly six hundred years ago, is the unmissable trip: a 25-minute ferry from Downtown, then an hour up loose scoria to a crater rim looking over the whole Hauraki Gulf. Waiheke is the wine version, forty minutes out. The Sky Tower's 328 metres impress from the ground and merely feel tall from inside. Mount Eden's crater is free and gives the same isthmus view.
What things cost in Auckland
A flat white is NZ$5.50 to $6.50 and a Ponsonby brunch lands between NZ$24 and $32. AT HOP fares within a single zone run a little over two dollars, with a daily cap that makes a busy day cheap. The Waiheke ferry is the expensive commute at roughly fifty dollars return. Auckland Art Gallery is free to residents, and Cornwall Park, the Domain and Mount Eden cost nothing.
Auckland with kids, realistically
Kelly Tarlton's runs a moving walkway through a shark tunnel built inside disused sewage tanks under Tamaki Drive, a better story than the aquarium itself. Auckland Zoo's Te Wao Nui section is entirely native species. The Domain and Cornwall Park, where sheep still graze below One Tree Hill, are the free running-around options. Ferries take strollers without fuss; buses and trains need an AT HOP card.
When the weather turns in Auckland
Auckland collects roughly twice London's annual rainfall but delivers it in fewer, heavier bursts that usually clear within the hour. The Art Gallery and the Museum are the two long indoor stretches, at opposite ends of the Domain. Commercial Bay's laneways and Britomart link under cover. Silo Park and Wynyard Quarter are miserable wet. The Devonport ferry is still worth doing in rain.
