What first-timers get wrong in Basel
Check into your hotel before buying anything: the BaselCard it hands over makes trams and buses free for the whole stay and halves most museum entries. EuroAirport puts French and Swiss exits inside one terminal, and choosing wrongly strands you in Saint-Louis with a border to recross. Trains into Germany depart from Badischer Bahnhof rather than Basel SBB. Almost every shop closes on Sunday, including the supermarkets.
What's actually worth your time in Basel
Basel's finest cheap thrill is a Rhine crossing on one of four reaction ferries, the Wild Maa, Leu, Vogel Gryff and Ueli, which hang from an overhead cable and are pushed across by current alone with no engine at all. Behind the red sandstone Muenster, the Pfalz terrace overlooks the whole river bend. The Rathaus on Marktplatz really is as red and as painted as photographs claim. Tinguely's Fasnachtsbrunnen clanks outside the theatre.
What things cost in Basel
Museum entry is the real expense: about CHF 25 at the Kunstmuseum or the Beyeler and CHF 18 at Tinguely, each halved by the BaselCard. A short-hop tram ticket good for four stops is CHF 2.60. Hiring a Wickelfisch swim bag for the Rhine drift costs CHF 10 a day against a CHF 30 cash deposit. A beer on the Kleinbasel bank runs CHF 7 to 9 and a restaurant main CHF 30 upward.
Basel with kids, realistically
Zolli, the city zoo, sits inside the ring road minutes from the station and includes a children's section where goats are handled rather than watched. The Spielzeug Welten Museum on Steinenvorstadt keeps thousands of teddy bears, which lands well with under-eights. Tinguely's kinetic sculptures start when a child stamps on a foot pedal, so the museum survives short attention spans. At the St. Alban paper mill they pull their own sheet.
When the weather turns in Basel
Roughly forty museums inside a city you can cross on foot means weather barely registers. The Kunstmuseum's three buildings absorb an afternoon on their own, with the Antikenmuseum and the Museum der Kulturen within two hundred metres. Markthalle, a 1929 concrete dome by the station, now works as a covered food hall. Across the German border, the Vitra Design Museum campus is about fifteen minutes on bus 55 from Claraplatz.
