When the weather turns in Basel

Roughly forty museums inside a city you can cross on foot means weather barely registers. The Kunstmuseum's three buildings absorb an afternoon on their own, with the Antikenmuseum and the Museum der Kulturen within two hundred metres. Markthalle, a 1929 concrete dome by the station, now works as a covered food hall. Across the German border, the Vitra Design Museum campus is about fifteen minutes on bus 55 from Claraplatz.

Basel's museums, and which one to pick

The Kunstmuseum holds the world's oldest public art collection, purchased by the city in 1661, including the great Holbein group, Boecklin's Isle of the Dead and one of Van Gogh's three Daubigny's Garden canvases. Its permanent collection costs nothing after five each evening and all day on the first Sunday of the month. It closes Mondays, as does Museum Tinguely. Fondation Beyeler out in Riehen opens daily and justifies the tram.

What to eat in Basel

Laeckerli are the local biscuit, hard rectangles of honey, candied peel and hazelnut sold across the city though the Laeckerli Huus on Gerbergasse carries the name. During Fasnacht everyone eats Mehlsuppe, a dark browned-flour soup, with onion and cheese tarts at four in the morning. The daily Marktplatz stalls sell produce and hot lunches, while Feldbergstrasse in Kleinbasel is where Turkish and Balkan cooking stays genuinely affordable.

What's actually worth your time in Basel

Basel's finest cheap thrill is a Rhine crossing on one of four reaction ferries, the Wild Maa, Leu, Vogel Gryff and Ueli, which hang from an overhead cable and are pushed across by current alone with no engine at all. Behind the red sandstone Muenster, the Pfalz terrace overlooks the whole river bend. The Rathaus on Marktplatz really is as red and as painted as photographs claim. Tinguely's Fasnachtsbrunnen clanks outside the theatre.

Basel after dark

Summer nights belong to the Kleinbasel bank, where buvettes such as Oetlinger and Flora set beer taps and crates on the gravel until roughly midnight and the city drifts along the water. Rheingasse behind them keeps the older bars; Steinenvorstadt across the river is the cinema-and-cocktail strip. Nordstern, a converted cargo ship moored downstream, is the club that matters. Night trams run only Friday and Saturday and carry a supplement.

When to go to Basel

The month to avoid is December — around 7°C (45°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
