What first-timers get wrong in Marseille
An RTM single is 1.90 euros, but the network is smaller than the city, so walking distances run longer than the map suggests. Sugiton and En-Vau in the Calanques require a free summer booking and turn away arrivals without one. Keep bags closed around Gare Saint-Charles and Noailles after dark. Bouillabaisse advertised under 30 euros is not bouillabaisse.
What's actually worth your time in Marseille

The Quai des Belges fish market runs every morning on the Vieux-Port and holds ten genuinely interesting minutes. Boats to the Frioul islands and Chateau d'If turn the transport into the outing itself. The Prado beaches are proper sand with playgrounds, which is rare on this coast. The city is steep with poor pavements, so a carrier beats a pram in Le Panier.
When the weather turns in Marseille
MuCEM is the obvious call and its indoor route through Fort Saint-Jean keeps working in weather. The Vieille Charite's cloister is roofed, the Musee d'Histoire sits inside the Centre Bourse shopping centre beside the excavated Greek harbour, and the Docks Village at Joliette gives covered eating and shops. Calanques boat trips cancel in mistral, so keep those bookings flexible.
