What first-timers get wrong in Whistler
Whistler is a two-hour drive from Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway, and the shuttle costs less than a week of parking; village day lots charge and the free lots sit further out. Accommodation carries MRDT tax on top of GST and PST. Tipping is fifteen to twenty percent as everywhere in Canada. Cell coverage drops away on the alpine trails.
What's actually worth your time in Whistler
The Peak 2 Peak Gondola crosses 4.4 kilometres between Whistler and Blackcomb with an unsupported span of 3.024 kilometres, and the summer Alpine Experience ticket bundles it with both base gondolas and the Peak Chair. Whistler Village is a purpose-built pedestrian resort dating from 1980, not a town with history. Lost Lake and the Valley Trail cost nothing at all. What things cost in Whistler
Summer alpine sightseeing including Peak 2 Peak runs roughly 85 to 105 Canadian dollars for an adult, free under seven. The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre is 25 dollars adult and 12 for six to eighteen. Village pub mains sit between 24 and 34 dollars with a pint near 9. Winter lift tickets bought at the window cost far more than the same day booked weeks out.
Whistler with kids, realistically
Meadow Park Sports Centre, five kilometres north on the free bus route, has a lazy river, a whirlpool and a rink, and locals treat it as the wet-weather default. The village is entirely pedestrian and flat along the Stroll, so strollers work well, though cobbled sections rattle. Peak 2 Peak is free for under-sevens. Bear-viewing tours run in 4x4s and suit school age upward.
When the weather turns in Whistler
This is coastal temperate rainforest and October and November are genuinely wet. Scandinave Spa is designed for exactly that, since hot baths and an enforced silence rule work better in rain than sun. Meadow Park's pool and the Audain are indoors, and the Core has climbing walls. Rain in the village often means snow at 1,800 metres, a reason to ride up rather than sit down.
