The Whistler Travel Guide

Your Whistler trip, planned — when to go, how many days you need, and where to base yourself, mapped out before you book.

Step 1 · Timing

When to visit Whistler

Now in Whistler—:—Sunrise—:—Sunset—:—

December–April, June–September are popular times to visit Whistler. When to go, in planning terms: Winter is peak ski season; summer for hiking, mountain biking, the Peak-2-Peak gondola. Deciding your dates first shapes the rest of the plan — how many days to spend and which area to base yourself in.

Warmest in Whistler: Jul (24°C / 75°F) · Coolest: Jan (2°C / 36°F) · Wettest: Jan (~22 rain days)

Step 2 · Trip length

How many days in Whistler?

Pick a length and follow a ready-made Whistler itinerary — each one sequences the sights so your days flow without backtracking.

Step 3 · Itinerary

Build your Whistler itinerary

A good Whistler plan bases you in one central area, groups nearby sights into each day, and leaves room to slow down. Start from a day-by-day itinerary above, then adjust the order to your dates and pace.

Step 4 · Your base

Where to base yourself

A central base cuts travel time between sights.

  • Whistler Village. Base yourself here: Main pedestrian village — hotels, lifts, the most restaurants, après-ski bars.
  • Upper Village. For your itinerary: East side near Blackcomb base — Fairmont Chateau, quieter slope access.
  • Creekside. An area to consider: South-end village near the original 1965 lift — locals’ corner, cheaper food.

Step 5 · Transport

Getting around Whistler

Free village transit + paid Whistler Transit System for outlying areas. Moving between sights: The Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver is famously scenic — drive yourself if you can rather than taking the bus.

Step 6 · Your trip

Plan by trip style

  • Family trips. Travelling as a family: The Peak-2-Peak gondola, the Whistler Sliding Centre tobogganing, summer trail walks at Lost Lake.
  • Couples. Travelling as a pair: A Bearfoot Bistro tasting menu, a Scandinave Spa thermal afternoon, a Garibaldi Lake hike.
  • Solo travel. Going solo: Backpacker hostels in the village are dense and sociable; ski-rental shops are open until 9pm.

Step 7 · Before you go

Practical planning

Practical precautions for the trip: Very safe. Real risks are off-piste avalanches in winter, bear encounters on summer trails (carry bear spray), and altitude. Moving between sights: The Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver is famously scenic — drive yourself if you can rather than taking the bus. Work these into the plan early — they affect which neighborhood to base yourself in and how much to fit into each day.

Step 8 · Where to stay

Hotel or whole home?

Two ways to book your Whistler stay — pick by trip type.
