Rome's rain arrives in autumn bursts. The Pantheon's oculus is open to the sky and rain falls straight through onto the sloped floor drains, which is worth timing deliberately. Otherwise take the Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Doria Pamphilj's private gallery with its Velazquez, the Baths of Diocletian, and San Clemente, where a medieval basilica sits on a fourth-century church built over a Mithraic temple.

What first-timers get wrong in Rome

Validate paper ATAC tickets in the on-board machine, since the 1.50-euro BIT covers 100 minutes of buses with transfers but only one metro ride. Sitting at a cafe table costs more than standing at the bar, and the coperto is a legitimate cover charge rather than a scam. Dress codes at St Peter's and the Vatican Museums are genuinely enforced.
