Rome's museums, and which one to pick

The Vatican Museums close Sundays except the last of each month, when entry is free from 09:00 to 14:00 and the queue can run past three hours, so paying on a weekday is the sane choice. The Capitoline Museums hold the she-wolf and the original Marcus Aurelius bronze whose copy stands outside. Palazzo Massimo displays the Villa Livia garden frescoes, lifted whole from their walls, and stays reliably quiet.
