Planning a babymoon in Pokhara

Lakeside basecamp of the Annapurnas — paragliding at sunrise, World Peace Pagoda hikes, trek permits in hand. For two, decide between a hotel with service and a private rental with space — Expedia lists both in Pokhara, so you can weigh price, location and reviews in one search.

When the weather turns in Pokhara

Few places in Nepal collect more rain than this valley, and the Annapurnas simply disappear behind cloud for much of June to September, so do not build a trip around the view then. The International Mountain Museum and the Gurkha Memorial Museum fill the dry hours. Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, running underground opposite Devi's Fall, is more impressive in rain, when the waterfall thunders through its far end.

What to eat in Pokhara

Order the Thakali set rather than plain dal bhat. It comes from the Thak Khola valley up towards Mustang and arrives as dal, rice, a meat curry, fermented gundruk greens and pickles sharpened with numbing timur pepper, for 350 to 600 rupees at Lakeside. Momos run about 200 a plate. Fish pulled from Phewa itself turns up as sadeko machha. Lakeside menus otherwise drift international; the Old Bazaar cooks Nepali.

What first-timers get wrong in Pokhara

Any walk into the Annapurna Conservation Area needs an ACAP permit, 3,000 rupees for foreigners and 1,000 for SAARC nationals, bought in Pokhara or Kathmandu before you set off, and foreign trekkers are now required to walk with a licensed guide. Pokhara's international airport still runs almost no scheduled international flights, so you arrive via Kathmandu, either a short hop or a seven-hour bus down the Prithvi Highway.

What's actually worth your time in Pokhara

Phewa Lake's rowing boats cost 500 to 800 rupees an hour, or about a thousand with someone rowing, and nearly all of them stop at Tal Barahi, the pagoda temple on the island. Sarangkot at dawn means leaving Lakeside around five to watch Machhapuchhre turn gold; the taxi runs 1,500 to 2,000 rupees return. The World Peace Pagoda is free but wants a boat crossing and a half-hour climb. Devi's Fall is brief.

Pokhara's museums, and which one to pick

The International Mountain Museum near the airport charges foreigners 750 rupees for expedition equipment, summit records and the ethnography of the peoples who actually live beneath these peaks; allow two hours. The Gurkha Memorial Museum, 200 rupees, covers the regiments recruited from these hills, from selection tests to campaign medals. The Annapurna Natural History Museum on the Prithvi Narayan campus is free, and its butterfly cabinets are the reason to bother.
