Sydney rock oysters are a different species from Pacifics and taste briny-sweet; the fish market at Blackwattle Bay shucks them by the dozen. The genuinely great eating is suburban and reached by train, with Cabramatta for Vietnamese, Lakemba for Lebanese sweets on Ramadan nights, and Marrickville for both. In the centre, Spice Alley behind Kensington Street is cheap and covered. A pie at Harry's in Woolloomooloo is a rite.

Take the ferry to Taronga and ride the Sky Safari cable car up, so the transport becomes half the day. For swimming, Balmoral and Manly's harbour side are netted and calm where Bondi has rips that catch grown adults. The ocean pools at Bronte, Wylie's and North Sydney are the local answer for toddlers. Australian summer UV routinely hits eleven, so rash vests are standard rather than fussy.

When the weather turns in Sydney

Sydney rain arrives as an east coast low rather than drizzle, dumping in hours and then clearing. Because the three big museums are free, a wet day costs nothing: the Australian Museum, the MCA and the Art Gallery's Tank. The Queen Victoria Building's arcades let you cross several blocks under glass, and the Mitchell Reading Room in the State Library on Macquarie Street is a fine place to sit out a storm.
