The Hakone Free Pass from Shinjuku is ¥7,100 for two days after the October 2025 increase, with a cheaper version sold from Odawara, and it repays itself if you complete the loop once. A Romancecar reserved seat adds roughly ¥1,200 each way. Open-Air Museum entry is about ¥2,000 and five black eggs at Ōwakudani cost ¥500. A ryokan with two meals starts near ¥20,000 per person.
What first-timers get wrong in Hakone
Ōwakudani shuts without notice when volcanic gas readings rise, and the ropeway then runs a replacement bus, so check status the morning you go rather than the night before. The Hakone Free Pass covers eight modes of transport but not the Romancecar, which needs a separate reserved-seat charge. Run the circuit anticlockwise from Hakone-Yumoto to stay ahead of the Odawara coach crowds. Tattoos still bar entry at many public onsen.
What's actually worth your time in Hakone
Hakone is a circuit rather than a place: Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto, the Tozan railway's three switchbacks up the mountain, a cable car, the ropeway across Ōwakudani's sulphur vents, then a replica pirate ship over Lake Ashi. Hakone Shrine's torii standing in the water draws a queue that regularly runs an hour for a single photograph. Mount Fuji shows itself from the lake only in clear air, which mostly means winter mornings.
What to eat in Hakone
Ōwakudani's kuro-tamago are eggs boiled in sulphur springs until the shells blacken, sold five to a bag with the claim that each adds seven years to your life. Down in Hakone-Yumoto the main street sells onsen manju steamed buns and Kanagawa soba. Kaiseki dinners come attached to the ryokan rather than sold separately. Wakasagi smelt from Lake Ashi and Gotemba beer are the lakeside plates.
Hakone after dark
Hakone has no nightlife and makes no pretence otherwise. The last ropeway and pirate ship run mid to late afternoon depending on season, the Tozan trains thin out, and the evening is built entirely around the ryokan: a bath before dinner, kaiseki in yukata, another bath after. Hakone-Yumoto's shops shut by six. Public onsen close earlier than visitors expect, so check before counting on a late soak.
