When the weather turns in Hakone
Rain removes the whole point of the ropeway and the lake, because Fuji vanishes and Ōwakudani closes in bad weather regardless. Pivot indoors instead: the Pola Museum, the Okada Museum and the Open-Air Museum's indoor pavilions all hold up wet. Better still, stop travelling and use the water — Yunessun at Kowakidani has covered baths, and Tenzan's rock pools near Yumoto are partly roofed.
Hakone's museums, and which one to pick
The Hakone Open-Air Museum has been arranging sculpture across a hillside since 1969 and opens nine to five daily; its Picasso Pavilion holds several hundred works and its stained-glass tower is something children climb inside. The Pola Museum of Art is buried in beech forest to protect the view and is strong on French Impressionism. The Okada Museum and the Hakone Museum of Art's moss garden are the quieter pair.
What to eat in Hakone
Ōwakudani's kuro-tamago are eggs boiled in sulphur springs until the shells blacken, sold five to a bag with the claim that each adds seven years to your life. Down in Hakone-Yumoto the main street sells onsen manju steamed buns and Kanagawa soba. Kaiseki dinners come attached to the ryokan rather than sold separately. Wakasagi smelt from Lake Ashi and Gotemba beer are the lakeside plates.
What's actually worth your time in Hakone
Hakone is a circuit rather than a place: Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto, the Tozan railway's three switchbacks up the mountain, a cable car, the ropeway across Ōwakudani's sulphur vents, then a replica pirate ship over Lake Ashi. Hakone Shrine's torii standing in the water draws a queue that regularly runs an hour for a single photograph. Mount Fuji shows itself from the lake only in clear air, which mostly means winter mornings.
Hakone after dark
Hakone has no nightlife and makes no pretence otherwise. The last ropeway and pirate ship run mid to late afternoon depending on season, the Tozan trains thin out, and the evening is built entirely around the ryokan: a bath before dinner, kaiseki in yukata, another bath after. Hakone-Yumoto's shops shut by six. Public onsen close earlier than visitors expect, so check before counting on a late soak.
