Few cities put an alpine ridge this close to a coffee. The Hungerburgbahn funicular leaves from Congress in the centre, and two cable cars carry on to Seegrube at 1,905 metres and Hafelekar at 2,256, roughly twenty minutes from the old town. The Goldenes Dachl balcony, with 2,657 gilded copper tiles, is free to look at; the museum behind it is small.
What to eat in Innsbruck
Tyrolean cooking is fat, salt and altitude: Tiroler Grostl of fried potato, beef and an egg on top; Speckknodel dumplings in broth; Kasespatzle buried under fried onions; Kaiserschmarrn shredded pancake to finish.
