What's actually worth your time in Innsbruck

Few cities put an alpine ridge this close to a coffee. The Hungerburgbahn funicular leaves from Congress in the centre, and two cable cars carry on to Seegrube at 1,905 metres and Hafelekar at 2,256, roughly twenty minutes from the old town. The Goldenes Dachl balcony, with 2,657 gilded copper tiles, is free to look at; the museum behind it is small.

Innsbruck after dark

A university town with close to thirty thousand students runs livelier than its size implies. The Viadukt arches, bars built into the railway viaduct, stay open late and stay cheap, while Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse in the old town skews touristic. The pastel houses along the Inn in Mariahilf photograph better than they drink. Term time is busy; August is noticeably flat.

Innsbruck's museums, and which one to pick

The Hofkirche holds Maximilian I's enormous empty cenotaph ringed by 28 black bronze figures the locals call the Schwarze Mander, one of Europe's strangest funerary monuments, and Maximilian is not even buried in it. Schloss Ambras above the city keeps the Habsburg Kunstkammer, a Renaissance cabinet of curiosities still in its purpose-built room, and closes through November.

Innsbruck with kids, realistically

Twenty minutes from a city cafe to an alpine meadow means you can abandon the plan the moment children tire, which is the real advantage here. The Alpenzoo, halfway up the Hungerburg line and reachable on that ticket, keeps only Alpine species. Bergisel's ski jump lift thrills older kids, and Swarovski Crystal Worlds at Wattens has a large outdoor play area.

When the weather turns in Innsbruck

The Hofburg and the Hofkirche stand side by side and fill a wet morning between them, and Schloss Ambras is entirely indoors apart from its gardens. Swarovski Crystal Worlds, twenty kilometres out with its own shuttle bus, is built for precisely this weather. The Markthalle and the arcaded old town give covered eating. When to go to Innsbruck

The month to avoid is December — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
