Hala Koszyki and Hala Gwardii house the modern food halls. Paczki doughnuts are eaten in enormous quantity on Fat Thursday, the week before Lent begins.
Warsaw after dark
Praga's Zabkowska street and the Koneser vodka distillery courtyard hold the bars that used to be workshops. Pawilony, a huddle of low huts behind Nowy Swiat, is the cheap and loud outdoor drinking yard. Vodka comes cold and neat in forty or fifty millilitre measures. Clubs run to five, and the Vistula boulevards fill with beach bars right through summer.
