What's actually worth your time in Warsaw

The Old Town is a meticulous postwar reconstruction of a district the Germans demolished in 1944, and knowing that changes entirely how it reads. The Palace of Culture and Science, Stalin's unloved gift, sells a thirtieth-floor terrace ticket giving the only view that includes the building itself. Lazienki Park stages free Chopin concerts on summer Sundays. Praga across the river survived the war intact.

What to eat in Warsaw

Pierogi are the obvious order, but the milk bar is the Warsaw institution: subsidised canteens such as Bar Prasowy on Marszalkowska serving zurek, kotlet schabowy and nalesniki for a handful of zloty. Hala Koszyki and Hala Gwardii house the modern food halls. Paczki doughnuts are eaten in enormous quantity on Fat Thursday, the week before Lent begins.

Warsaw's museums, and which one to pick

POLIN traces a thousand years of Polish Jewish life through reconstructed rooms rather than glass cases, costs 45 zloty, closes Tuesdays and admits everyone free on Thursdays. The Warsaw Rising Museum charges 35 zloty, also shuts Tuesdays, and is likewise free on Thursdays. The Copernicus Science Centre is hands-on and books out days ahead. The Chopin Museum keeps his last piano and manuscripts.

Warsaw after dark

Praga's Zabkowska street and the Koneser vodka distillery courtyard hold the bars that used to be workshops. Pawilony, a huddle of low huts behind Nowy Swiat, is the cheap and loud outdoor drinking yard. Vodka comes cold and neat in forty or fifty millilitre measures. Clubs run to five, and the Vistula boulevards fill with beach bars right through summer.

Warsaw with kids, realistically

The Copernicus Science Centre on the riverbank is built for hands-on ages five to fourteen and needs booking days ahead. Lazienki's peacocks and red squirrels cost nothing at all. Trams and buses are largely low-floor, and an adult travelling with a child under four rides free. The Neon Museum in Praga's Soho Factory is a short, odd hit with older children.

When to go to Warsaw

The month to avoid is January — around 3°C (37°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
