What's actually worth your time in Rhodes
Rhodes Old Town is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, ringed by four kilometres of Hospitaller walls, and the dry moat is a free walk almost the whole way round. The Street of the Knights costs nothing; the Palace of the Grand Master, rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930s as a residence for Mussolini, is ticketed. The Mandraki deer mark a legend, not the Colossus.
What first-timers get wrong in Rhodes
Rhodes was Italian from 1912 to 1943, which explains the Fascist-era architecture along Mandraki and confuses visitors expecting Greece throughout. Cars cannot enter the Old Town's core and the gates are numbered rather than named. The meltemi blows hard on the west coast, which is why Prasonisi is a kitesurfing beach and Lindos is not. Off-season, half the island simply shuts.
Rhodes's museums, and which one to pick
The Archaeological Museum occupies the Knights' fifteenth-century hospital, and the two Aphrodite statues found in the harbour silt are what justify the walk. The Grand Master's ground floor displays Hellenistic mosaics the Italians lifted from Kos. Kallithea Springs, a 1929 art-deco thermal complex on the east coast, functions today as a swimming and photography spot rather than a working spa.
When the weather turns in Rhodes
Rhodes takes its rain between November and March, when much of the island is closed anyway. Inside the walls the Archaeological Museum, the Palace of the Grand Master and the Decorative Arts collection sit within three minutes of one another. The Italian-built Nea Agora on Mandraki is a covered polygon of cafes, and Filerimos monastery above Ialyssos keeps its cloister dry.
What things cost in Rhodes
Expect 15 to 22 euro a head for a taverna meal with wine, 4 to 5 for a gyros in Rhodes Town and about 3 for a frappe. Old Town monument entries run from single figures to the low teens each, and EU under-25s go free with ID. KTEL buses to Lindos cost a few euro and take ninety minutes. Sunbeds are 10 to 15 a pair.
