What's actually worth your time in Koh Samui

Wat Plai Laem, with its eighteen-armed Guanyin standing over an artificial lake, rewards more time than the Big Buddha at Bang Rak, which is free, twelve metres tall and effectively a car park beside the pier. Hin Ta and Hin Yai at Lamai are a five-minute stop and an anatomical joke. Ang Thong marine park, a couple of hours west by boat, charges foreigners three hundred baht and swallows a whole day.

What to eat in Koh Samui

Hua Thanon on the southeast coast is a Muslim fishing village whose morning market sells the island's best seafood and southern curries to almost no tourists. Nathon's market before nine is where cheap breakfast lives. The Friday walking street at Fisherman's Village in Bophut trades from about five until ten. Southern Thai cooking means sour turmeric gaeng som, and coconut in nearly everything, since Samui grew coconuts long before it grew hotels.

Koh Samui's museums, and which one to pick

Samui has no museum worth the word, which is worth knowing before an itinerary depends on one. The nearest thing is Wat Khunaram on the ring road, where Luang Pho Daeng, who died meditating in 1973, sits upright in a glass case wearing sunglasses. Nathon's waterfront row of Chinese shophouses is the only surviving pre-tourism architecture on the island. Almost everything else was built after 1975.

Koh Samui after dark

Chaweng carries the loud version, with Soi Green Mango and the beach parties at Ark Bar, while Bophut's Coco Tam's does swings, floor cushions and fire dancers on the sand. Lamai sits between them, thinner and cheaper. The Full Moon Party is not on this island at all: it happens on Koh Phangan, and boats leave Bangrak and Maenam through the night, returning at dawn with people who have not slept.

Koh Samui with kids, realistically

Choeng Mon and Maenam shelve gently and stay shallow a long way out, which suits toddlers better than Chaweng's steeper drop and jet-ski traffic. Pink Elephant Water Park at Lamai and Paradise Park Farm up in the hills each fill a morning. Samui Elephant Sanctuary retired riding entirely and takes children who can handle mud. Do not put a child on a rented scooter; the ring road is genuinely dangerous.

When to go to Koh Samui

The month to avoid is August — around 29°C (84°F) with roughly 20 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, August the month most people skip.
