What first-timers get wrong in Koh Samui
No taxi here runs a meter, so the fare is whatever you agree before the door shuts; songthaews on fixed daytime routes cost fifty to a hundred baht. Police checkpoints ask for an International Driving Permit and the standard roadside settlement without one is around five hundred baht. Photograph a rented scooter from every angle before riding off, and leave a cash deposit rather than your passport.
Koh Samui after dark
Chaweng carries the loud version, with Soi Green Mango and the beach parties at Ark Bar, while Bophut's Coco Tam's does swings, floor cushions and fire dancers on the sand. Lamai sits between them, thinner and cheaper. The Full Moon Party is not on this island at all: it happens on Koh Phangan, and boats leave Bangrak and Maenam through the night, returning at dawn with people who have not slept.
What things cost in Koh Samui
A scooter rents for roughly 140 to 350 baht a day depending on season and shop. A plate of something at Nathon or Hua Thanon market runs sixty to a hundred baht, while a Chaweng beachfront restaurant multiplies that several times over. Ang Thong charges foreigners three hundred baht on top of the boat fare. Flights in are expensive because Bangkok Airways owns the airport, and the Donsak ferry undercuts them heavily.
Koh Samui with kids, realistically
Choeng Mon and Maenam shelve gently and stay shallow a long way out, which suits toddlers better than Chaweng's steeper drop and jet-ski traffic. Pink Elephant Water Park at Lamai and Paradise Park Farm up in the hills each fill a morning. Samui Elephant Sanctuary retired riding entirely and takes children who can handle mud. Do not put a child on a rented scooter; the ring road is genuinely dangerous.
When the weather turns in Koh Samui
Samui's wet season is October to December with November the worst of it, the opposite of Phuket and the Andaman coast, so a Christmas booking can rain hard. Central Festival in Chaweng is the only proper mall and covers cinema, food court and shops. Cooking schools and massage shops absorb an afternoon cheaply. Sea trips get cancelled outright when the Gulf turns rough, and Ang Thong boats stop first.
