What's actually worth your time in Prague

Prague Castle is a walled district rather than a building: the Old Royal Palace and St Vitus need the paid Circuit ticket, while the courtyards and the view over the red roofs cost nothing. Charles Bridge is a photo stop, best taken before seven in the morning. The Astronomical Clock's hourly apostle parade lasts under a minute and disappoints almost everyone; Petrin's funicular and mirror maze repay more.

What to eat in Prague

Svickova na smetane, beef in cream sauce with bread dumplings and cranberry, is the dish to order, alongside gulas and roast duck with red cabbage. Lokal and U Kroka serve it without tourist markup. Trdelnik sold along Karlova is Hungarian in origin and not Czech at all. Drink tank-fresh Pilsner Urquell, and look to Vinohrady and Karlin for the better modern kitchens.

Prague's museums, and which one to pick

The National Gallery is scattered across palaces: Veletrzni palac for twentieth-century Czech and French modernism, Schwarzenberg for Baroque, Kinsky for Asian art, all shut Mondays. The Jewish Museum sells one circuit ticket covering the Spanish Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue walls carrying nearly eighty thousand handwritten names, and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Prague after dark
