What to eat in Prague

Svickova na smetane, beef in cream sauce with bread dumplings and cranberry, is the dish to order, alongside gulas and roast duck with red cabbage. Lokal and U Kroka serve it without tourist markup. Trdelnik sold along Karlova is Hungarian in origin and not Czech at all. Drink tank-fresh Pilsner Urquell, and look to Vinohrady and Karlin for the better modern kitchens.

Prague with kids, realistically

Older Tatra trams are step-up, so a pram means waiting for a low-floor car or using the metro, where lifts exist but sit at odd ends of the platforms. Cobbles punish small wheels everywhere in Mala Strana. Children do well at the Troja zoo, reachable by river boat, and at Petrin's mirror maze and tower. The Castle's long stone climb suits ages seven upward.

When the weather turns in Prague

Rain suits the interiors here. The Klementinum's Baroque library hall runs timed tours only, so book ahead. Obecni dum keeps you dry in Art Nouveau comfort, and the Lucerna passage, one link in a chain of covered arcades off Wenceslas Square, hangs Cerny's upside-down horse over its atrium. Otherwise ride tram 22 end to end for a heated tour of the city.

When to go to Prague

The month to avoid is January — around 4°C (39°F) with roughly 12 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
