What's actually worth your time in Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv's UNESCO listing is for buildings, not monuments: roughly four thousand International Style blocks put up by German-trained architects in the 1930s, best read along Rothschild Boulevard and around Bialik Square. Independence Hall at Rothschild 16 is where the state was declared in 1948. Old Jaffa's stone lanes and the Shuk HaPishpeshim flea market are the counterweight. The beach promenade runs roughly fourteen unbroken kilometres.

What to eat in Tel Aviv

Sabich, fried aubergine with egg, potato and amba crammed into pita, was carried here by Iraqi Jews and is the sandwich to learn first. Abu Hassan in Jaffa serves hummus, masabacha and ful, then shuts the moment the pots empty, often by two. The Yemenite Quarter behind Carmel Market does jachnun and marak temani on Saturdays. Levinsky is the spice and Balkan-pastry strip, not a produce market.

Tel Aviv's museums, and which one to pick

Unlike Jerusalem, museums here mostly open on Saturday and close early on Friday instead. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art's Amir Building folds a spiral of galleries around a light-filled void. ANU, on the university campus in Ramat Aviv, reopened in 2021 as the largest museum of Jewish history anywhere. The Eretz Israel Museum is built around the Tell Qasile dig, a Philistine port still exposed in its grounds.

Tel Aviv after dark

Clubs do not fill until one, and Friday is the biggest night, which collides with Shabbat: trains and intercity buses stop Friday afternoon and restart Saturday evening. The city runs its own free weekend shuttle buses to patch the gap, and the yellow sherut minibuses on Allenby keep going regardless. Florentin's dive bars and the Teder courtyard off Levinsky carry the character; the Port is where bottle service went.

Tel Aviv with kids, realistically

This is the flat one, with wide pavements, a ramped seafront promenade and beaches whose swimming zones are marked and lifeguarded, so a pram works where Jerusalem's stairs defeat it. Gordon Pool is filled with seawater beside the marina. Yarkon Park has pedal boats and a water park. The genuine hazard is electric scooters, which come fast and silent along the tayelet from behind.

When to go to Tel Aviv

The month to avoid is January — around 18°C (64°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: May is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
